Amphibian Excursion 2012  Life Logo 20 years
"This was the first time I ever heard European tree frogs", one participant exclaimed delightedly at the end of the well-attended excursion.

Thirty people had followed the invitation to join an excursion to the nature reserve Ochsenmoor at lake Dummer. NABU Lower Saxony and the Naturschutzring Dummer e.V. had arranged a verspertine excursion to mark the 20th anniversary of the European Union’s LIFE-programme. Dr. Markus Richter, project manager of NABU Lower Saxony's LIFE AMPHIKULT project, as well as Ulrike Marxmeier and Frank Körner, staff members of the Naturschutzring Dümmer, guided the group along various water bodies and provided extensive insights into the animals populating the area. While the pool frogs could be spotted only from a distance, grown common newts as well as their larvae could be observed at close range.

The excursion was completed by a concert by the European tree frogs. From ponds on either side of the trail, several males made their noisy calls. As the result of a protection project of the Naturschutzring Dummer, European tree frogs can once again be listened to at lake Dummer. After the species had disappeared from the lake Dummer area for decades, several dozen specimen now live at the edge of the Ochsenmoor. Targeting a long-term re-population and spread of the species, more spawning grounds are in the planning by both the Naturschutzring and the AMPHIKULT project. Calling tree frogs are to be heard again soon all over the lake Dummer area.
